Chapter 101 - 24

The Crushing Blow (Surah Al-Q’ariah)

(11 verses in total; revealed in Makkah)

[Recitation]

Again a relatively short chapter calling attention to resurrection – an event that will happen without prior warning and with unimaginable upheavel to the the earht and to all living beings. This and many other chapters unfold in bits and pieces the calamity to the natural world known to us and the initiation of the next life that is yet unknown but foretold throughout the Qu’ran.

Key themes in this short chapter are as follows:

  • The event of resurrection is explained in terms of crushing blow of unimaginable magnitude and catastrophy that will render all living human beings and those in the graves scattered as dead moths

  • Everyone’s actions and deeds will be put on a balance of justice from God and good and evil people will become known to one another with consequences to follow as people of the heaven or people of the hell, with no room of injustice any more

In the Name of God, the God of Mercy, the Endower of Mercy!

The Crushing Blow!

        What is this Crushing Blow?

What will explain to you what this Crushing Blow is! (v. 1-3)

It is a Day

When people will be scattered like moths

When the mountains will be like tufts of wool (v. 4-5)

Then for him whose measure (of good deeds) will be heavy

He will have a pleasing life!

But for him whose measure will be light

The abyss will become his dwelling!

What can explain to you what this (abyss) is?

        It is a blazing fire! (v. 6-11)
