Chapter 106 - 23

The Tribe of Quraish (Surah Al-Quraish)

(4 verses in total; revealed in Makkah)

[Recitation]

This Surah is a direct follow up from the previous one where God protects the Quraish from the army of the elephant and now directs them to be mindful of the wider protections that God extends to them through secure trade to distant lands, market exchanges that happens in and around Kabah in secuirty that lives them profit and livelihood.

Key themes in this short chapter are as follows:

  • The trade that Arab undertook to distant lands of Yemen, Syria and other places during the time of the Prophet and prior generations under traditional tribal secutity, honor, hospitality, etc., are by the grace of God

  • A mark of thankfulness would be to extend the sense of gratitude and acceptance of God’s message Who also makes the Kabah a sanctuary and a trading center for them

In the Name of God, the God of Mercy, the Endower of Mercy!

(This is how God ensures) the protection of the Quraish

Their protection during the winter and summer journeys

Let them then worship the Sustainer of this House (Kabah)

           Who feeds them against hunger!

Who secures them against fear! (v. 1-4)
