Gen-Z is stepping up as one of the most engaged and socially conscious generations in history. From climate action to social justice movements, young advocates are using their voices to demand change. But how do you take that passion and transform it into a career that drives real impact? That’s where public policy comes in. Whether it’s influencing legislation, shaping government programs, or working on policy research, this field provides a powerful avenue to create systemic change.
As the deadline for MyLLife’s Public Policy Scholarship approaches on May 31, 2025, this month’s Gen-Z column is dedicated to helping students bridge the gap between passion and policy. If you’re a student eager to make a difference in government, law, or policy-making, this is your chance to secure funding for your impact-driven journey.
What is the MyLLife Scholars: Public Policy Scholarship?
This scholarship is designed to support students who have secured an unpaid summer internship in the field of public policy. We recognize that these opportunities are crucial stepping stones toward meaningful careers, yet financial barriers often prevent students from fully engaging. To help, MyLLife Inc. is offering up to $3,500 in funding per student.
Beyond financial support, this scholarship connects you to a network of changemakers—peers, mentors, and professionals who are committed to shaping a more just and equitable future.
Eligibility Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency
- Full-time undergraduate (sophomore or above) or graduate student at an accredited U.S. university
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
- Must have an unpaid internship secured for Summer 2025 in the public policy domain
- Priority given to first-generation or minority students, but all are encouraged to apply
Why Public Policy?
Public policy is where real change happens. A career in policy-making allows you to shape laws, influence government decisions, and advocate for underrepresented communities. Gen-Z is already leading movements, but with hands-on policy experience, you can learn how to implement solutions, draft impactful legislation, and collaborate with policymakers to drive long-term change.
Other Ways to Get Involved in Public Policy
If you’re passionate about making a difference but don’t yet have an internship, there are still plenty of ways to gain experience and get involved:
- Join Student Organizations – Many universities have public policy, debate, or political science clubs that engage in advocacy work and policy discussions.
- Volunteer for a Campaign or Advocacy Group – Whether it’s a local election or a national movement, volunteering helps you understand how policies are shaped and enacted.
- Take Policy-Oriented Courses – Enroll in courses that cover public policy, government relations, and law to build a strong foundation.
- Attend Public Hearings & Town Halls – Engaging with local government meetings helps you understand the decision-making process and connect with policymakers.
- Apply for Fellowships & Training Programs – Many organizations offer leadership programs that provide mentorship and real-world policy experience.
- Get Involved with MyLLife Inc. – Look into our Economic & Social Justice Program, where students research and showcase inequities in the U.S. economic system. Through this initiative, you can contribute to policy discussions, create educational resources, and advocate for systemic change.
By taking these steps, you can start building a career that aligns with your passion for advocacy and change-making.
