All of us at MyLLife are pleased to introduce one of our 2024 MyLLife Scholars, Laura English!
My name is Laura Isabel and I am studying a Masters in Global Commerce and Policy with George Mason University. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Homeland Security.
This summer, I serve as an Immigration intern for the International Rescue Committee, who provides opportunities for refugees to thrive in America. The IRC provides education and tools to refugees who were resettled in the United States by providing safe and affordable housing, employment services, education and integration, and access to health liaisons. My work includes assisting attorneys with communication to mainly Afghani refugees about the status of their cases with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. I also help with providing services to clients with setting up legal consultations. I occasionally interpret for Spanish speaking clients during intake appointments.
I am extremely humbled and grateful to the MyLLife Scholars 2024 Cohort for the funding so I could take this opportunity to transition from corporate back into international relations and advocacy. I applied for the MyLLife scholarship after receiving encouragement from my dean. After my interview with Rashed, I was inspired by his passion to give back to the community. My internship is providing a beautiful steppingstone for me to rejoin public policy and advocacy and use my Spanish skills effectively. I genuinely feel like I am making a difference in peoples lives while being supported by the MyLLife Scholarship.
