MyLLife Digest: February 2026

As promised in the January Issue, I am going to return to the notion of Zakat (obligatory wealth-based giving/sharing for common good) given that the Month of Ramadhan is fast approaching.  For many of us, those who fulfil our Zakat commitment, it is time to estimate, allocate and fulfil this important and foundational obligation, one of the five pillars of our faith... 

Our faith explicitly called for two types of giving – voluntary giving (charity - Sadaqat) and obligatory giving/sharing (paying your due - Zakat). Even though we tend to conflate Zakat with Sadaqah as if both are charity, in reality these are two different concepts and call for different ways to fulfil their purposes, even though they can certainly overlap in how resources are targeted and carried out...
