Gabriella, a member of our MyLLife Scholars 2023 Cohort, shared her Summer internship experience with us:
This summer I served as a law clerk for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of the Principal Legal Advisor in the Government Information Law Division. As a law clerk, I was able to engage with the Privacy Act and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and ensure ICE compliance with both. Both statutes promote transparency of the administration with members of the public.
My role was to assist in adjudicating FOIA appeals and protect against the inadvertent disclosure of sensitive information during litigations. Due to the nature of the agency, ICE experiences a high volume of FOIA requests and it was highly rewarding to be able to assist in efficiently responding to requests and court ordered disclosures. This experience allowed me to gain hands-on experience with FOIA which is integral to all government agencies and the functioning of our democracy. I hope to use the skills I gained this summer as a federal employee after graduation.
Thank you, Gabriella, for sharing your experience!
