MyLLife Digest: October 2024

September News Wrap-Up

This is a new series we started last month where we will give a quick run-down of events that might be of interest to our readers and in general about the world we live in.  Let us know if you find this series helpful. We will continue to increase its breadth and depth as we get more volunteers to collate and catalog relevant news and events for our readers.

World events:

  • The war on Gaza and now in Lebanon continues unabated despite claimed efforts by Western power brokers. Here is an opinion on the Guardian that provides further perspective and the forum on Open To Debate between Eylon Levy, a staunch supporter of Israel and Mehdi Hasan, a critic of Israel is worth listening to here
  • Dr. Muhammed Yunus, a Nobel Peace Laureate has taken as Chief Advisor to an interim government that has been tasked by student lead citizens group to restore democracy and rule of law in the country of Bangladesh.  This is a tall order, and we wish him well! Here is short interview with NPR recently.
  • US election is coming up in less than 40 days and the stakes cannot be higher for democracy, rule of law and common decency for USA as well as the world.  Pls make sure you vote!
  • West African country of Benin recently announced that any African American subjected to slave trade who can trace their ancestry to African can seek citizenship in Benin by recognition.  You can read the report here.  This option is available in Ghana as well and Steve Wonder, the legendary musician became a Ghanian citizen
  • Another area of the world that has not received much attention is the impending famine in South Sudan due to on-going military conflict there.  Here is a report from Economist on another human tragedy

 Climate:

  • Continued build of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere mostly from human activities, burning of fossil fuels, large scale destruction of forest for beef production, mining, etc.  Short of altering our habits, reducing intensity of energy consumption and making home appliance and industrial production more efficient, another side of the effort is to reduce carbon from air by either direct capture or creating carbon sink by planting trees to replace those that are lost to logging and other human activities.  Here is a little story from Brazil about an effort on planning tree in the Amazon on lands deforested before.

 Mother’s milk

  • Interesting articles on the diverse and yet unexplored benefits and composition of mother’s milk. This article from Economist is an interesting read.
