Section I: Early Makkan Chapters (610 – 615 CE)

Chapter 107 - 20

Empathy (Surah Al-Maun)

(7 verses in total; revealed in Makkah)

[Recitation]

A very short chapter that brings to our attention the need for social justice and sincerity in expressing and practicing faith. This being an early revelation emphasizes for the early Muslims the importance of purity in their intention and to look after the poor and helpless of the community – a commitment that is incumbent on every Muslims and every person of faith in all generations.

Key themes in this chapter are as follows:

  • Denial of faith is demonstrated by those who deny good care to the needy and the vulnerable – in other words a person of faith is bound to have empathy for all, including the most needy and helpless

  • Faith is also incomplete in those who lack mindfulness in their rituals and devotion to God, make their faith a showcase to claim favor, rather than a sincere faith and feels no empathy for others, especially for the needy

In the Name of God, the God of Mercy, the Endower of Mercy!

Have you seen them?

       Those Who deny the faith

              Are abusive to orphans

Partake not in feeding the poor (v. 1-3)

So are those who worship

       But their worship lacks mindfulness

              They wish to be seen

They are devoid of any empathy!1(v. 4-7)

1ma’un” has been translated as acts of kindness or small acts of kindness or common kindness – emphasizing every small acts of generosity and goodness to others. I have tried to include them all in using the word empathy that includes being able to see things from others’ perspective and connect with people at their level and practice acts of common kindness, generosity, neighborliness and good relationships in all of their conducts
