The Dawn (Surah Al-Fajr)

This short chapter and the next are known to have been revealed at the same instance, giving protection from witchcrafts and other forms of sorcery that might harm the innocent from those who practice such witchcrafts.

Key themes in this short chapter are as follows:

  • We are instructed to seek refuge in God who brings the day break to dispel the darkness of the night

  • We are asked to seek protection from the harm of created world, the evils of the darkness, the spells of witchcrafts, and the jealousy from the envious.

In the Name of God, the God of Mercy, the Endower of Mercy!

Say:

       I seek refuge in the God of dawn

              From the evil of His creations

              From the evil of darkness as it envelopes

              From the evil spells of witchcrafts

              From the evil of enviers, when they envy (v. 1- 5)
