The Side Hustle Generation
Gen Z is also the side hustle generation. In addition to primary jobs, many of us are pursuing freelance work, small businesses, or creative endeavors on the side. Gen Z is the first generation to grow up fully immersed in the digital world, and this fluency with technology is driving our work preferences. We see no reason to be tethered to physical offices when productivity tools like Slack, Zoom, and Notion allow us to work together, from anywhere.
Technology allows us to work smarter, not harder. AI and other innovative platforms help streamline repetitive tasks, allowing more time for creative and strategic thinking. As a result, we’re less tolerant of workplace inefficiencies and are quick to advocate for tools that increase our productivity!
Challenges and Opportunities
While Gen Z’s approach to work has many strengths, it also presents challenges. For instance, the blurred lines between work and personal life in remote settings can lead to burnout if boundaries aren’t maintained. Also, reliance on side hustles or gig work can make long-term financial planning, such as saving for retirement, more complex.
However, these challenges also present opportunities for growth and innovation. Employers who listen to Gen Z’s needs and adapt accordingly can build workplaces that are more inclusive, dynamic, and sustainable. Gen Z’s push for flexibility is paving the way for policies that benefit workers of all generations.
