My name is Deven Grant and I am a rising junior from North Smithfield, Rhode Island. I attend Howard University where I study political science as my major and philosophy as my minor. This summer I interned in the office of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. I initially only worked during the first session where I mostly handled phone calls, mail, and any side projects assigned by the staffers that work there. However, I was invited back for the second session where there have been more meetings and events with the Senator for me to attend. For example, I attended a town hall meeting where I helped set up and passed the mic to constituents when they had questions. Being able to listen to the thought provoking questions and the excellently crafted responses from the Senator
was an amazing experience to be a part of. Simply being in the environment provides insight into my future as I wish to engage in government myself. It also gives me a first hand look at the work that is required of a US Senator. One of the most interesting activities I have done was organizing the Senators past schedules, While these were days that already have passed, it was amazing being able to see his schedule and all the work he does. He truly is constantly working to please the constituents of his state while also attempting to make a difference within the Senate (which I personally think he is doing a great job at). It has been such an amazing opportunity and I am excited to take the lessons I learned to future internships.
