Koyasan

This is Koyasan or Mount Koya located in Wakayama, Japan. It is a large temple settlement that is the headquarters of the Koyasan sect of Shingon Buddhism. Shingon is one of the major sects of Japanese Buddhism and originates from Vajrayana lineages in India and China. This specific sect of Buddhism is very old and has values and from ancient Buddhism. The temple on Mount Koya contains many famous sites that are important to locals. One of these sites is the Okunoin, the mausoleum for Kukai, a Monk who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Japan and first settled Mount Koya in 819. This temple is rich with history and cultural significance which is why it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
